In order to increase their chances of dethroning Edwin Allen High School for the Girls’ Champs title, Hydel have made major adjustments to their jumps programme.

They have brought over coach David Hall from Vere Technical High School, along with star jumper Lamara Distin, to bolster the area.

Hall believes that they are already looking like they can do better than the 28 points they amassed at last year’s championships.

“We are stocked and piled in Class Three. We have Alliah Baker (who finished third in the high jump in Class Four last year), Shanta Jones, (the Class Four long jump champion) and KhadeJah Bailey, all competing for spots in the long and high jumps,” Hall said.

Distin, the defending champion in Class One, is in sixth form at the Ferry-based institution and is eligible to compete.

She is ranked second in the class with her 1.81m season best, but Hall believes the lanky athlete will use her experience to retain her title.

“She has won at Carifta and has the experience, so I am not worried about her,” Hall said.

Distin’s main challenge should come from Edwin Allen’s Janique Burgher, who is leading the class with a 1.85m clearance.
