KC looking to score heavily in middle distance

Bellefield High School’s Tavaughn Martin’s incredible times in the 800 and 1500 metres at the Digicel Central Championships may have unsettled a few heads but not that of Hamlin Pagon, the middle distance coach at Kingston College.

“The big runs by Tavaughn might affect our scoring chances slightly but our boys will not play dead. Our motto says: The brave may fall but never yield, and these boys’ characters are built on that,” he said.

Pagon’s Class Three boys of Markey Tyrell, Schevoron Wardlow and Diego Stewart have been running well in the 800 and 1500 and were expected to score heavily for the Purples. But the emergence of Martin may have pushed them down the order.

The veteran coach is hoping to score more than the 60 plus points he tallied for his alma mater last year and he believes his boys are equipped to do so.

“Blake( Jamaica Colleges’ J’Voughnn Blake) will start as favourites in Class Two but any of the Henry boys can take him on,” he explained.

Gianni and Giovouni Henry have been scoring valuable points for KC since they were Class Three and Pagon expects that to continue.

“At the Gibson McCook Relays Giovouni split 1:54 from the blocks and Gianni split 1:52 running the second leg, so they are not far from where Blake is at,” Pagon said.

In Class One, team captain Tarees Rhoden will have the responsibility of leading his charges into battle and will have to come up big against 800m favourite Kimar Farquharson of Calabar High School.

“For me, as the team captain, I know I have a job to do and I am up for it,” Rhoden said. “The main aim this year is to win the championships and everyone has to play his part, including myself.”
