Adrian Weir may just be 14 but he is already chalking up some impressive stats in cricket. He recently returned from representing Jamaica in the regional under-15 Super50 Cup in Antigua, where he copped the Most Outstanding Player title.

Weir scored a total score of 241 runs in the tournament, including 161 runs against the Leeward Islands, which earned him the Man of the Match award.

“It was my dream to get that chance and I grabbed it with both hands. It was such a lovely feeling,” he said.

On the local scene, Weir has been making waves in the under-14 cricket competition. On May 10, in one innings against Central High in Clarendon, he scored a record 258 runs.

“Cricket is a sport that I really love,” the Vere Technical High School student told CENTRAL STAR.

“It is not just a game for me, it is everything.”

A resident of the troubled community of Effortville, Weir said he intends to use cricket to see the world. He looks to the day when he will be afforded the opportunity to play in the big leagues, being a part of the Indian Premier League, the Caribbean Premier League, the Big Bash and other cricket competitions around the world.

“Cricket can get me out of my community, but not only that, I would like to give back to the Effortville Primary School, where it all started, and Vere Tech, where I branched off,” the youngster shared.

In the family

Weir said that his elder brother, Andrew Weir, a former Vere Tech student and Headley Cup player, was responsible for stirring his interest in the game. He, however, has hard-hitting batsmen Chris Gayle and Andre Russell as his cricketing idols.

“I do look up to them because of their style of cricket. It matches my style,” said Weir, who is also an exciting strokeplayer. Weir’s coach, Robert Turner, describes him as a hard worker and one who dedicates his time and efforts to the game.

“I like his attitude towards work. He is young and playful, as is expected of any 14-year-old, and just a pleasant youth to work with,” Turner said of his charge.
