Westmoreland proud of SDC Cricket community projects

Petersville, Westmoreland's defending champions of the SDC/Wray and Nephew National Community T20 Cricket competition is proud of what they did last year and is looking forward to be in the position to make another contribution to community development as 15 per cent of the prize money from the competition is mandated to go towards.

Last year, Petersville purchased a six-burner stove for the Petersville Early Childhood Institution and a lawnmower for the Petersville All-Age School.

In 2017, champions Orange Hill renovated the play area at the Jubilee Early Childhood Institution. In 2015, the Whitehouse team helped to finish the Whitehouse Police Station and in 2016, installed water tanks as part of the Water Improvement Project at the Kings Early Childhood Institution.

"It's a pleasure for us. Petersville is a cricket community, we have a lot of representatives that go on to play for Jamaica. For this SDC competition, we are happy that giving back to the community is mandatory," said Roal Winter, Petersville interim captain, and assistant manager.

"For the basic school, they didn't have a stove at all. They used to do their cooking off-site and bring it to the school, which was very inconvenient for them, so it was a big, big help. For the all-age school, they had no lawnmower so the schoolyard was always in a bad condition so the project was a big help for them as well," he added.

Winter, who is confident they will be able to defend their title this year, is looking forward to aiding two of their teammates and community members whose house was burnt down recently.

Playing good cricket

"We are confident we have been playing good cricket so far. For this year, we are looking at helping to rebuild a structure for two of our team members (brothers Nicroy Green and Andre Morgan) whose house got burnt down earlier this year," Winter said.

Westmoreland's SDC parish manager Ron Daley is proud of what the teams have been doing over the years.

"We at the SDC see it as extremely positive and that is why we have it in place where all teams that receive monetary prize must contribute at least 15 per cent to community development. We believe this is a way to engage youngsters to become active in community affairs," Daley said.
