The Jamaica Scorpions wrapped up the shortened West Indies Championship with an impressive inning and 118-run win over the Leeward Islands Hurricanes in Antigua.

The victory, which was their third of the season, propelled the Scorpions to joint third in the competition along with the Guyana Jaguars on 91.8 points. With the remaining two rounds suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Barbados Pride would have been declared the winners having topped the standings with 134.8 points followed by the Trinidad & Tobago Red Force in second with 94.6 points. The Windward Volcanoes finished fifth with 80 points, followed by the Leeward Hurricanes in sixth with 52.8 points.

Assistant coach of the Scorpions Nikita Miller says the season has brought more positives than negatives with the young team showing a lot of fight despite some indifferent performances.

"We put in a lot of work from even before the season started and we created an environment where the players were comfortable and allowed to express themselves. I believe the disciplined approach and influence of coach Coley also helped the team," said Miller.

Jelled better

Miller said this current unit has jelled better as a group and the performances from some of the players showed with regards to the togetherness of the team.

"A lot of the guys that performed for us this season are really close friends and it showed in how we batted and bowled as a unit but having said that there is a lot of room for improvement."

Jamaica's Jermaine Blackwood ended the season as the tournaments leading run-scorer with 768 runs at an average of 51.20. Nkrumah Bonner scored the fourth-most runs with 523, while captain John Campbell ended in the sixth position having scored 491 runs.
