Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) teams could soon be given permission to individually seek sponsorship for the upcoming season.

Cavalier FC technical director Rudolph Speid, the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), and RSPL clubs are in the process of creating a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that would allow clubs the power to court potential partners for themselves.

"Of course, we have to jump through some hoops, so there will be some stipulation by the JFF as to how it works, and once that is done, then the clubs will be free to go to market to try and get sponsorship for the league," Speid told STAR Sports. "Until that is done, there is nothing that can be done from the club side."

Speid said that the proposed MOU was previously in the hands of the Premier League Clubs Association (PLCA). He confirmed that the new company that will take over league operations will continue the process once it is active.

New entity

"Because the PLCA is in the process of being dormant, this new entity is the one that will take over trying to get the sponsorship for the clubs," he said.

Mount Pleasant manager David Galloway declined to comment on the possible new agreement, but in addressing the concerns clubs will have for sponsorship because of the COVID-19 pandemic, he does not believe there will be many variations in courting partnerships for the upcoming campaign.

"It's nothing different. It's almost the same. You just have to structure it correctly," he said.

The RSPL is targeting a return this autumn after the 2019-20 campaign was cancelled in May because of the pandemic.
