File United States forward Jozy Altidore (17) collides with Jamaica forward Junior Flemmings (12) after Altidore passed the ball during the first half of a Concacaf Gold Cup semi-final match on Wednesday, July 3, 2019.

National striker Junior Flemmings has maintained his innocence that he did not use an anti-gay slur to a San Diego Loyal player during their United Soccer League (USL) Championship match on Wednesday Night.

Wednesday's match between the San Diego Loyal and Flemmings' team, Phoenix Rising FC, was forfeited by the Loyal, who were leading 3-1 at halftime. Flemmings allegedly used a homophobic slur to Loyal player Collin Martin, who is openly gay. Loyal players walked off the field in protest after Loyal coach Landon Donovan and Martin brought the issue to the attention of the referee.

In a statement on Wednesday night, Flemmings said that he did not use the slur to Martin.

"At no point did I say a homophobic slur towards Martin. I do not know him personally, but I respect all my opponents equally, Martin included," he said.

San Diego Loyal on their Twitter page after the forfeit said that they reject any such behaviour

"Last week, we made it loud and clear that we do not stand for racism or homophobia. Nothing has changed this week," they said.

In statements released by the league office and Phoenix Rising FC, they said that the matter is currently being investigated.
