Sir Alton in a different class!

October 02, 2020
SIR ALTON, ridden by Anthony Thomas, wins the Ronron Trophy at Caymanas Park in St Catherine on September 13, 2020.

SIR ALTON’s two serious performances off the COVID-19 lay-up, after shaking off the rust at five furlongs straight, suggest he is on his way to the top class and should easily brush aside overnight allowance runners on Sunday.

Back-to-back stakes records, 1:04.4 and 1:11.1, for five and a half and six furlongs, respectively, though run on fast surfaces, were still impressive, even if adding a full second to compensate for the track variance.

SIR ALTON’s ease of victory, in both races, should also be noted, despite the winning margins being no farther than two and a half lengths on either occasion.

Quality of performance

Predetermined weights, conditions, unlike handicapping, do not take quality of performance nor company faced into consideration, hence imported SIR ALTON carrying an ‘automatic’ 117lb, shamelessly getting weight from the likes of FORMAL GLADIATOR, GARRINCHA and EL PROFESOR while others such as PEKING CRUZ and ENUFFISENUFF are burdened with topweight 126lb against the out-of-class foreigner.

ENUFFISENUFF ought to be the exacta horse after his brave run against GOD OF LOVE on September 19. Breaking from post-position two with Dick Cardenas, who abhors an inside draw in a stiff sprint, ENUFFISENUFF was tailed off at the half mile and into the lane before closing nine lengths on the winner, who made all the running.

The additional furlong will be to ENUFFISENUFF’s liking but SIR ALTON has nothing to fear from the grey. Having dispatched quick SHE’S A HIT at five and a half furlongs, there’s no pace that the speedsters, PEKING CRUZ, SOUL CURE and TRULY AMAZING, can lay down that he can’t track.
