Meet organisers laser-focus on COVID protocols ... - as local athletics set to kick off this weekend
Millard Dunbar, chief organiser of the Tyser-Mills Classic, said strict COVID-19 protocols will be put in place at this Saturday's meet which will be held at the Calabar High School.
The meet, which will be first on the local track and field calendar, is expected to attract some of the island's top schools' and clubs' athletes.
Dunbar told STAR Sports that with COVID-19 pandemic continuing to spread across the world, they will not be leaving anything to chance and, therefore, everyone who attends must adhere to guidelines that have been set out by the Ministry of Health and Wellness.
"There is a document which came from the World Health Organization along with the Ministry of Health and Wellness, which shows how sports in schools, clubs and other organisations can continue, that we have received and are examining," said Dunbar.
"We will be following this document and we have worked with the Ministry of Health and Wellness along with the JAAA to ensure that all is in place for the meet," he said.
"The JAAA have been very supportive of this meet because they have been giving us advice as to how to successfully stage it, and we are very happy that they are a part of this meet," Dunbar said.
He added that all the schools, clubs and institutions are aware of the protocols and guidelines that have been put in place for the meet and, therefore, he expects everyone to adhere to them.
"Social distancing is a protocol that will be employed, the mandatory wearing of masks will be another one, and there will be constant use of sanitisers and handwashing, and so all of those will be employed during the meet," Dunbar said.
"Every athlete who turns up at the meet will be issued with a mask and, for example, if a school sends 15 students, then they will be given 15 masks for their 15 athletes," he said.
"Depending on how many coaches that they have, then they will be given a mask, and so there will be no excuse if the athlete is not wearing a mask at the meet."
