Blackwood signs for Houston Dash in NWSL
Reggae Girlz defender Deneisha Blackwood will remain in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) for another year but with a different team.
The 23-year-old Blackwood signed a one-year deal with 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup winners Houston Dash ahead of the 2021 season, with the option of an extension into 2022. The Dash made the announcement on their club website on Tuesday. Blackwood, who signed a short-term deal with the Orlando Pride before the NWSL Fall series last year, was released by the club after her contract expired.
She said that she is ready to take advantage of the opportunity, given the chaotic nature of the last campaign, which was caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
"With all the uncertainty in the world today, my heart is full for this opportunity with the Dash," Blackwood said on the club website. "This team's achievements over the years have been progressing tremendously, and I can't wait to compete with my new teammates and continue this journey."
ROAD TO WINNING
Before her move to the United States, Blackwood spent one season with Czech Republic club Slavia Prague and made nine league appearances for the team on their road to winning the league title. She also helped them advance to the round of 16 of the Women's Champions League before they were eliminated by Arsenal.
Blackwood was primarily used as a left back and Dash head coach James Clarkson says that her technical ability complements the team's playing style.
"We are pleased to add Deneisha to the squad and help her fulfil her full potential. She adds depth to our left side and will fit well with the style of play," Clarkson said on the club's website.
The Dash won the inaugural Challenge Cup last year, a tournament which signalled the return of NWSL football after months of inactivity caused by COVID-19.
Blackwood's signing further increases the number of Jamaicans playing in the league this season to five, as she joins Havana Solaun (North Carolina Courage), Konya Plummer (Orlando Pride), Sydney Schneider (Washington Spirit) and Chenya Matthews (Racing Louisville).
