‘Teddy’ backs Moore to do well at Sheff Wednesday
Former national player Jermaine 'Teddy' Johnson says that he has the utmost faith in his former national teammate Darren Moore to turn around the fortunes of English Championship club Sheffield Wednesday as he was named their new manager last week.
The 46-year-old Moore was appointed to the job on March 1 after a two-month search for a permanent boss following the firing of Tony Pulis on December 28. Moore left League One outfit Doncaster Rovers for his new role with the club in sixth place in the table.
During his brief international career with Jamaica between 1999 and 2000, Moore was Johnson's teammate. According to Johnson, he got to know Moore personally during his time playing in England and therefore, he believes that he will be able to steady the ship of a club Johnson called home for seven years.
"Darren is a good guy. I have been around him for the national team, played a couple of games with him, but mostly when I was in England we always were around each other. The guy is a gentle giant, very humble, and I know he is going to do really well for the club, because this club is like a family," Johnson told STAR Sports.
POOR FORM
Sheffield Wednesday are currently in the bottom three of the table, in 23rd place on 28 points, six points away from safety with a third of the season left. The poor form is concerning to Johnson, given his attachment to the club and the fans. From 2007 to 2014, Johnson made 231 appearances for 'The Owls', scoring 25 goals. He helped the team earn promotion to the Championship from League One in 2012.
While concerned about his former club's current predicament, he hopes that Moore will be able to reward the fans with success.
"It's going to be difficult for him to just go in there right away and try to get the players [ready], but hopefully everything works [out], because Sheffield Wednesday is one of my favourite clubs and the fans are some of the best in the world," Johnson said. "And I know they want to see good [things] for the club and the players. I hope everything works in the right way, because I know Darren is a good person and whatever he is doing, he wants to do it well."
Moore's first two games in charge ended in defeats to Rotherham and Reading on Wednesday and Saturday, respectively.
