Best and Worst of Week Two of the JPL
BEST
Waterhouse
Last season's leaders Waterhouse dispatched Dumbeholden 2-0 with substitute Shaqueil Bradford getting the pick of the goals. If they hope to replicate the form that led to them challenging for the title last season, more results like this will be needed quickly
Vere United
Vere United, one of the two teams that struggled for wins last season, are off to an ideal start after two games. Donovan Duckie, their new head coach, says that he is surprised at how his team has been improving. It is a welcome change for a team that was doomed for relegation last year before the cancellation.
Mount Pleasant
For the majority of their game against Humble Lion it seemed that Mount Pleasant would not be able to take advantage of the many chances they created. Despite two saved penalties in the first half, it was former Humble Lion striker Francois Swaby who haunted his old team. The 1-0 win gives them much-needed points after failing to take advantage of their chances in their opener against Tivoli Gardens.
Mikhail Harrison
With Humble Lion starting goalkeeper Dennis Taylor is away with the Reggae Boyz for the Gold Cup, Mikhail Harrison stepped in and kept his team in the game against Mount Pleasant with two penalty saves in the first half. A good showing from the goalkeeper in spite of their eventual 1-0 defeat.
Tivoli Gardens
In their only meeting this season against Arnett Gardens, Tivoli Gardens managed to get bragging rights with a 1-0 win in their delayed fixture on Monday. Tivoli head coach Phillip Williams was pleased with their perseverance against Mount Pleasant despite their fatigue in the latter stage. he will be impressed with the way his young team worked hard to deny Arnett a way back into the game.
WORST
Humble Lion
Head coach Andrew Price might be optimistic about the improved fitness of his team but they are still winless in their first two games. In this shortened format, with only one round of games, wins need to start coming in soon to kick-start their season.
Dunbeholden
Dunbeholden were second best against Waterhouse and their assistant coach Ricardo Smith has already called their losing start to the season a massive setback. They have nine more games to get their season back on track or risk falling further behind.
Portmore United
Head coach Ricardo Gardner will not be pleased at the way his team defended in their 1-0 loss to Vere after looking impressive in their opening win against Dunbeholden last week. The reigning champions will have an opportunity to fix their errors against Molynes United.
Arnett Gardens
Arnett Gardens had an extra week to prepare for Tivoli Gardens, but, ultimately, their first game of the season ended in defeat to their west Kingston rivals. Not a great way to start their season but with having played a game less than the other teams, they do not need to panic just yet.
