Munro clip wasteful Maggotty

Munro College broke the hearts of a wasteful Maggotty High School with a 1-0 win in the first game of the ISSA daCosta Cup double-header at St Elizabeth Technical yesterday.

Maggotty started the game on the front foot and looked likely to take the lead in the 11th minute from the penalty spot but Andre Ennevor put his shot wide of the left upright. They squandered two more clear chances before the teams went into the half-time break at 0-0.

Munro took the lead in the 69th minute. Sean Kenyon gave his team what proved to be the decider against the run of play as a demoralised Maggotty team couldn't reignite the first half spark.

Assistant coach of Munro, Michael Kedman, said they are happy to put three points on the table and hoped they can carry the confidence into their next game.

"We are happy with the win. The boys have done well after being under a bit of pressure from the weekend's game. It was a hot day but I think they managed the game quite well and coped with the early pressure," Kedman said.

"Yes, at times we rode our luck but we too had a few chances. I think at the end of the day three points is what we were looking for and we delivered that today so we are just looking forward to the next game," he added.

Xavier Hendricks, coach of Maggotty, was extremely disappointed in the team's performance in front of goal but is optimistic they can win their remaining games to give themselves a chance to get out of the zone.

"We should have won the game, I thought we played really well especially the first 30 minutes. I think we were at least two goals better than Munro but we lost our identity. It's just one of those days," Hendricks said.

"Yes, it may come back to haunt us based on the fact that we had a target of 10 points. However, we are taking things on a game by game basis. It's going to be tough but I think we can get nine points from the last three games although we have some tough opponents," he added.
