Depeiza rallies Windies U19s to win

West Indies Under-19 stand-in captain Giovonte Depeiza says they did well for their seven-wicket win over Scotland in their ICC Under-19 Men's World Cup match in St Kitts and Nevis yesterday.

After their opening loss to Australia, the Windies put in a clinical performance by first dismissing the Scots for 95, and then racing to 96 for three to seal the win.

Seamer Shiva Sankar put in a man-of-the-match performance with the ball by picking up three wickets for 17 runs in seven overs, which broke the back of Scotland's innings, despite 43 from opener Oliver Davidson.

For Shankar, the outing was a good one that has boosted his confidence for the remainder of the tournament.

"I'm just really happy with my performance today," he said. "I think that the wicket had a bit of bounce and the ball was swinging, so I was just happy to get a good start for the team. All of the players did well in the field, with some crucial catches so I am just really happy. Coming from a loss, I think that is a great performance there, so it is just about building and continuing and I'm just really happy with the performance and the win."

Sankar got good support with the ball from Onaje Amory and Anderson Mahase, who picked up two wickets each.

Opener Shaqkere Parris, with 26, Teddy Bishop, 23 not out, and Jamaica's Jordan Johnson, 14, saw the Windies over the line in just 19 overs and four balls.

With the regular captain Ackeem Auguste absent because of illness, Depeiza is delighted he could have led the team to victory.

"I'm very happy, it was a great all-around performance and we can still improve on the small things going on to the next game, but it was a good job," he said. "I think we need to work on the extras. I feel there were too many extras and the wickets we lost when we were chasing a small total; I feel we should be without loss to send a message."

The West Indies are now second in Group D on two points, the same as Australia, who have an inferior net run rate. Sri Lanka, who the West Indies play next, lead the group with four points from their two matches.
