Hill impressed with Haughton’s form - Believes he can crack Montego Bay XI with loaded striker pool
If Montego Bay United's Ladrick Haughton continues to score goals in the Jamaica Premier League, he will make head coach Ricky Hill's job harder as to whether he starts on a forward-heavy attack. But Hill says it is a problem that he would love to have.
Haughton, the STAR Baller for week three, played a key role in his team's 4-1 win over Molynes United, coming off the bench to score a brace, to get them their first win of the season in their return to the country's top flight.
With Hill wrestling with five forwards on his roster and figuring the right combination to extract their best, Haughton, he says, has played himself into the starting conversation not just with his finishing, but with his awareness and positioning.
"Since I have been here he has shown himself as someone who looks very lively in training. He is one of those strikers that moves well across the line and doesn't mind running behind defences," Hill told STAR Sports. "His finishing has been really impressive so far in the training sessions that we have had. Obviously, game time has been a little bit difficult for him because we have a number of forwards, we have five forwards and we are trying to pick the best combination."
With Montego Bay leading 2-1, Haughton managed to put his team further ahead with a great one-time, low finish in the 80th minute, with a backflip celebration to boot. But he was not done yet as four minutes later he got into a great position to burst down the field and rocketed a shot past the goalkeeper for his second.
It has been Haughton 's awareness that has impressed Hill the most after one month at the club. The Briton says that it will be up to him to figure out how best to use Haughton, but he believes a consistent starting role is not far off should he continue his rich form.
"He likes to be pretty mobile, elusive throughout the width of the pitch. But what I've been impressed thus far is his tendency to try to get into the right areas where goals are scored and that was shown on two occasions on Monday," Hill said.
"Everybody wants to start and sometimes it may not be the best thing for them. They might do better coming in when the game has slowed down a bit. (But) He is definitely challenging, they are all challenging. It's just for me now get the right combination."
