JPL Best and Worst - Weeks 2 and 3

BEST

Waterhouse

On January 24, in their first meeting against Cavalier since last season's championship final, Waterhouse Football Club enacted some form of vengeance for the penalty shootout loss which denied them the title, winning 3-0.

Last Sunday, Waterhouse continued their offensive production with a 4-1 drubbing of Dunbeholden, their perfect start to the season with three straight wins.

Mount Pleasant

There are only two teams left so far in the league that are yet to lose a game this season. One of them is Mount Pleasant, who registered back to back 1-0 wins over Harbour View and Vere United, respectively. While Waterhouse are the current leaders, thanks to a better goal difference, Mount Pleasant are showing that they will be in the hunt for one of the top-two places this season.

Harbour View

To the relief of head coach Ludlow Bernard, Harbour View finally got their first win of the season against Tivoli Gardens on Tuesday, after he lamented the bad luck that prevented his team from taking all three points before. Oshane Staple and Tarick Ximines got the goals for the team in their 2-1 victory, continuing their youth movement on the same day that their striker Oquassa Chong left the club to join Danish club Esbjerg FB.

Montego Bay United

Montego Bay United got their first win since returning to the top flight, defeating Molynes United 4-1, thanks to a second-half onslaught headlined by two goals from substitute Ladrick Haughton. After their first two games ended in defeat, a win will be welcomed for head coach Ricky Hill, looking to recapture the magic that saw the club win titles in 2014 and 2016.

WORST

Cavalier

Cavalier are realising that staying at the top of the league is a lot harder than getting there. They lost their defensive shape and then lost their head in the 0-3 defeat to Waterhouse with two players sent off, and then were edged by Portmore United 0-1 this week. Back-to-back losses have put the defending champions in ninth place, but with plenty of time to correct their frailties.

Molynes United

Molynes United could not solve Vere United's defensive equation and slumped to their first defeat of the season on January 25. And then, last Monday against Montego Bay United, Molynes were reduced to 10 men and the man advantaged doomed them to a 1-4 defeat. It has been a difficult start to life under their new head coach Garnett Lawrence, as the club is still searching for their first win of the season.

William Price

Against Humble Lion on Tuesday, Arnett Gardens goalkeeper William Price was culpable for letting the ball slip from his fingers, allowing Javain Thompson to equalise for the second time in their 2-2 draw. Arnett had the lead twice up to that point and prevented them from getting back-to-back wins. Price will have an opportunity to redeem himself immediately when Arnett face Harbour View tomorrow.

Tivoli Gardens

While pleased at how his young players acquitted themselves against Harbour View, Tivoli's head coach Phillip Williams said that their rebuilding job will need time after losing 2-1. Williams said that losing Trayvone Reid as well as Devroy Gray has forced a reshuffle in their core. However, he said that he hopes his team will have better luck in converting their chances than they did on Tuesday.
