Holder still positive after opening day
West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder says he and the rest of the team are still very positive after putting in a fairly good performance with the ball on the opening day of the first Test against England in Antigua and Barbuda yesterday.
The visitors resume today's second day on 268 for six after winning the toss, with Jonny Bairstow set to continue on 109 and Chris Woakes 24.
Holder was one of three West Indies bowlers to take two wickets on the day, as the home side started brightly by first reducing England to 57 for four at lunch.
The post-lunch and tea sessions saw the advantage move towards England, thanks to Bairstow's century which came off 190 balls and included 17 fours.
The right-hander got good support from wicketkeeper Ben Foakes who made 42, and 36 from Ben Stokes.
Holder, who picked up the wickets of Dan Lawrence for 20 and Foakes, said the wicket settled down quite a bit after the opening session.
"I thought the wicket got very slow and the ball got really soft. There was not much happening in terms of movement off the surface or through the air," said Holder.
The West Indies surely made the new ball count with Roach picking up two wickets for 71 runs and Jayden Seales two for 64.
For Holder, the key is to remain positive and make the new ball count on today's second day.
"We have to bring that energy and that is something we will be driving. I am still very positive and we must make the second new ball count. We have to dismiss one of these set batsmen early and get into the lower half with our bowlers as fresh as possible."
With the slow nature of the pitch, Holder added that the Windies will have to be patient when they get their chance to bat.
"It's important when we bat to leave alone a lot of balls and get a good sighter. That way we can really set ourselves up to get something big."
