JPL Best and Worst Week 10
Best
Arnett Gardens
Thanks to a heroic effort from goalkeeper Eric Edwards, and taking advantage of the chances they had, Arnett Gardens recorded their first west Kingston derby victory over Tivoli Gardens in two years, with a 2-0 win in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) at Sabina Park last Saturday. They now have the longest unbeaten streak (nine games) in the league and have won four of their last five, keeping themselves within striking distance of leaders Waterhouse.
Atapharoy Bygrave
Dunbeholden's Atapharoy Bygrave's patience and form in the league were rewarded with his first national senior call-up for the final three games of Jamaica's Concacaf World Cup-qualifying campaign. He celebrated the milestone with his league-leading ninth goal of the season in their 1-0 win over Humble Lion on Monday, to maintain second place in the table with 22 points, one less than Waterhouse.
Molynes United
Molynes finally ended their losing run with a much-needed win over Portmore United, thanks to goals from Carrick Stewart and Nicholson Nelson. Nelson's reward was a call-up to the national team, joining a contingent of local players that will get the opportunity to impress head coach Paul Hall. While the win will not improve Molynes' place in the table, as they remain in 11th place, it will give their morale a much-needed boost.
Worst
Portmore United
At the moment the best team in St Catherine is not Portmore United. The inconsistencies so far this season show a team that is trying to find its way in a rebuilding phase. They have now lost three of their last five games, conceding 10 goals in that span. Despite that, they are still in seventh place with 11 points, two points from sixth-place Harbour View. If they can finish the first round with a win, it would give them the morale boost needed for a turnaround for the second half of the regular season.
Humble Lion
Humble Lion found it tough against an in-form Dunbeholden team. Humble could not break down their stiff defence and went down in a 1-0 defeat on Monday. With one match to go in the first round, Humble Lion are still in ninth place with nine points, four away from sixth. If they can become more consistent, they can mount a late push for the play-off places.
Vere United
Vere United's second season so far under head coach Donovan Duckie has been difficult. They have now lost three of their last four games and are inching towards the bottom two places. However, Vere have two games in hand to play, which could see a change in their fortunes as they prepare for the second half of the season. Duckie says he hopes that getting key players healthy will be the break his team needs to get back to challenging for the top six.
