‘We deserved nothing’ - Donaldson furious after Reggae Girlz’s 5-0 loss to USA

Head coach Lorne Donaldson said that the Reggae Girlz were outclassed by reigning World champions the United States of America (USA) in their second group game of the Concacaf Women's Championship in Monterrey, Mexico, last night.

Goals from USA's Sophia Smith in the fifth and eighth minutes, as well as strikes from Rose Lavelle in the 59th minute, Kristie Mewis in the 82nd minute and Trinity Rodman in the 86th minute fuelled a dominant display by the Americans with Jamaica offering little in attack in the 5-0 result.

After the high of their opening 1-0 win over hosts Mexico on Monday, Donaldson did not mince words in his assessment of the team's performance against the Americans, saying that Jamaica deserved nothing from the game. ,

"It didn't take 10 minutes," he said in the post-match press conference. "We gave up two goals in [the space] of three minutes. We were, can I use the word? We were very s*****. We didn't play well. You are not going to play the World champions and play that bad and expect anything good coming out of the game. We weren't good."

Jamaica could only attempt four shots, with two of those on target, compared to the USA's 20 shots, with 11 of those on target. Donaldson said that his team made it more difficult with multiple unforced errors.

"The most disappointing thing is that when we got the ball, we gave it right back to them," he said. "We just couldn't link up and play a little bit to break up the pressure. Our front three just couldn't find the ball. We just couldn't link the game up and find people, and find spaces."

Captain Khadija Shaw was substituted in the 63rd minute with the USA already up 3-0, with Donaldson citing fatigue and the need to rest her for their final group game against Haiti on Monday.

Despite the defeat, Donaldson says that he is not discouraged, knowing that the opportunity to get an automatic berth into the FIFA Women's World Cup is still in their hands.

"They know it's a three-game series," he said. "Everybody has lost a game except the USA, in this group. So we are still right there, going into the next game. I think we are going to be fine."

The United States lead the group with six points while Jamaica remain on three.
