WI women go four down to English counterparts in 4th T20
West Indies Women, despite a spirited effort with the ball, were once again outplayed by their English counterparts as they went down by 49 runs in the fourth Twenty20 International (T20I) day/night at Kensington Oval in Barbados yesterday.
Electing to bat first, England Women posted their lowest total of the series so far, with 131 for eight off their allotted 20 overs.
Seamer Cherry-Ann Fraser bagged a career-best three wickets for 20 runs from her four overs, with right-arm off-spinner Sheneta Grimmond also picking up career-best figures by bagging three wickets for 33 runs from four overs.
Opener Sophia Dunkley continues her good form for England with a defiant 35 runs from 32 balls with four fours and a six.
Katherine Brunt came late down the order and smashed a brisk unbeaten 24 from 20 balls with Amy Jones getting 21 and Charlie Dean 20.
In their turn at the crease, West Indies could only manage to get 82 in 16 overs, with captain Hayley Matthews top scoring with 23, Shemaine Campbelle getting 17 and Afy Fletcher not out on 14. Shabika Gajnabi was injured and was unable to bat.
Seamer Lauren Bell was the main destroyer bagging four wickets for 12 runs from three overs with Sophia Eccelstone and Dean chipping in with two wickets each.
Down 4-0 in the T20I series, head coach Courtney Walsh was pleased with the team's bowling effort.
"I thought the bowlers came out and did an outstanding job. Cherry-Ann, Grimmond and even Afy did well. Everyone has shown bits, but the consistency is not there. We have nothing to lose and everything to play for in the last game. We are still looking to put good combinations together and just keep competing," Walsh said.
With the final game set for Thursday, Walsh and his unit are keen to get a positive result in the last game to avoid a whitewash.
"We still have to hold our heads high as we have the World Cup as our main picture," said Walsh.
