Mountain View, Hayes lead teams into SDC final phase

After the semi-finals were done and dusted at the GC Foster College in St Catherine recently, Hayes of Clarendon and Mountain View representing Kingston and St Andrew were the top qualifiers entering the final phase of the Social Development Commission (SDC) 4 in 1 National Community Competition.

Following the four disciplines - domino, football, netball, and cultural/talent performance - Hayes amassed most points, 32, from group two to lead all teams heading into the National Final which is slated for Sunday, January 22 at the Discovery Bay Community Centre.

Hayes secured the football and netball titles and finished seventh in the dominoes after which they took home five points for their cultural piece.

They will be joined in the final eight by Granville Trendsetters out of Trelawny who chalked up 30 points. Also moving into the finals are Maxfield from Kingston and St Andrew following their 26 points, with Farm Town from St. Ann rounding out the qualifiers after amassing 25 points and fourth place.

Over in group one, Mountain View came out firing on all cylinders and in the end secured 30 points to edge out Westchester from Portmore by one point for top honours.

Mountain View won the football competition and then placed second in dominoes and seventh in netball. Westchester were able to place second in netball, third in football and fourth in the domino. Both clubs took home five points for their cultural piece.

Joining Mountain View and Westchester in the final are Strathbogie out of Westmoreland who finished third and Mandeville United from Manchester who placed fourth.

This year's competition will have several cash prizes, with the champion teams at the parish level vying for trophies, medals, and their share of the total cash prize of $2,100,000.

In addition, $1,400,000 will be shared among the top 14 winners at the parish level. This sum will be used as a partial contribution to an SDC-approved community project, which is to be implemented by the community's Community Development Committee.
