Fracas at JPL match

A fracas erupted in the Jamaica Premier League match between hosts Vere United and Harbour View at the Wembley Centre of Excellence yesterday, with security personnel having to get involved to quell the anger of manager Oneil Smith of the visitors.

The incident stems from members of Harbour View's bench being frustrated by the calls by referee Carvel Banton, as they remonstrated their frustration, which boiled over until an official was issued a red card. This caused the fracas soon after behind the Harbour View bench.

Several players and officials of Harbour View got involved, including coach Ludlow Bernard, with police officers having to fire a shot to disperse the angry contingent.

Vere eventually chalked up their second win in their 1-0 defeat of Harbour View which was scored in the second minute by Lamard Neil, who robbed goalkeeper David Martin after the custodian made a hash of a back pass. Neil rifled a shot into the upper right corner to score Vere's fourth goal of the season.

Harbour View, however, had the lion's share of possession for the majority of the half but were found lacking in the final third with goalkeeper Roje Williams hardly tested.

The fracas halted action for 10 minutes and after the restart the action fizzled, the incident knocked the energy from both teams as Vere held out, with new assistant coach Jermaine Douglas pleased to secure their second win.

"This win is very important for us to climb up the table and that is the objective. The team has been struggling all season in front of goal and now we have gotten one in each of the last two games and, hopefully, we can continue on this journey," Douglas said.

Harbour View's Bernard declined an interview with the media.

Vere United, with the three points, have leapt Molynes United into 11th place with 13 points.
