We are going for three points – Bell

February 14, 2023

Jamaica's under-17 Reggae Boyz will be on the hunt for another three points when they come up against Guadeloupe in their second group match, as action in Group G of the Concacaf Under-17 Championships takes centre stage today at 5 pm in Ciudad City, Guatemala.

The Jamaicans will have their tails up after Sunday's emphatic 4-2 win over Cuba, thanks to a brace from Harbour View striker Orane Watson and a goal each from Jahmani Bell and overseas player Ashton Gordon.

The young Reggae Boyz currently lead Costa Rica by goal difference after the Costa Ricans got by Guadeloupe 2-1, and Bell, who scored Jamaica's opener on Sunday, says they are keen on putting in an even better performance against their French counterparts.

"Obviously, we are going for three points, and we also want to play a better game. It would also be good to get a clean sheet," Bell said after Sunday's win.

The 15-year-old Bell looked like a veteran finisher in the opening fixture, as his volley from inside the area set the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores Stadium alight, which was pleasing for the Wolmer's Boys' School player.

"It was a wonderful feeling to help my team win by scoring the opening goal and then assisting. The team did well, and it was a good job on both my side and the team's side."

In the meantime, head coach Merron Gordon says he is hoping that his tactical work with the players bears fruit when they take on Guadeloupe, who had 50 per cent of possession, but only two shots on target against Costa Rica.

"Guadeloupe is not a bad team. Costa Rica got two early goals on them, but they settled, and they fought. They are a tighter group than anybody thinks. At this age group, football is very close, but we know what we have to do tactically and technically to get the desired result each game," said Gordon.

In other games today, the nightcap will feature Cuba against Costa Rica, with the Cubans seeking their first win and the Ticos their second of the tournament.

Group H will be back at the Estadio Pensativo with two teams seeking their first result of the championship as Haiti take on Suriname.

The day will wrap up with Honduras squaring off with Central American rivals El Salvador in a battle of opening day winners.
