KC’s Grant anticipates Calabar battle
Kingston College's (KC) head coach, Leaford Grant, is relishing the potential return of tight title races with Calabar High at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships (Champs), with the recent Corporate Area Championships being an indicator that his rivals are having a resurgence under first-year head coach Corey Bennett.
KC captured the Corporate Area crown, holding off Calabar High with 427 points to 415, needing a victory in Class I boys 4x400 metres, the final event of the meet, to secure their win.
Grant hailed the job Bennett is doing in his short time at Calabar, who are showing signs of mounting a title challenge during Champs, scheduled for March 28 to April 1. He also knows KC's battles with Calabar over the years, with the latter enjoying an era at the top of high school athletics.
"We have seen where Calabar have been doing a rebuilding process. We saw it last year. So we are cognisant that they are there and Jamaica College also. We are not really surprised, but their new coach seems to have done a lot to add some inspiration to the boys, and a lot more interest is being shown in that programme," Grant said.
In many cases, familiarity may breed contempt when rivals face off against each other, but locking horns with their Red Hills Road foes for the title is something that Grant is looking forward to, recognising strong opponents can push them to their best.
"We always like when there is a lot of competition. Over the years, Calabar have always been our main competitor, and it's good to see them back competing at this level," Grant said.
