Organisers work on Champs online ticketing
ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships (Champs) Organising Committee Chairman, Richard Thompson, is confident that, having had a year to work out the problems, patrons should not encounter any issues purchasing online tickets for the event.
Thompson was speaking at last night's media launch at the National Stadium and was pleased with how ticket sales have gone so far, specifically using the online portal.
Thompson said that while there were issues last year with the process, the first time that it was introduced, those issues have been resolved to provide a smoother experience going forward.
"If I were to compare it to the years that we didn't have, we are well ahead of where we would normally be in terms of ticket sales. For the few glitches that persons would have experienced our technical team would have been working with them to rectify those," Thompson told STAR Sports.
"They are not many. Last year it was the first so it was significantly more. This year we have worked out some of the kinks, so the system is working relatively well I would say."
Online ticketing was one of the initiatives that were brought out of last year's Champs, which saw COVID-19 restrictions relaxed to allow limited fans to attend. The 2021 edition was held with no fans in attendance because of strict COVID-19 protocols.
Thompson said that the COVID-19-affected years forced them to change things not only with online ticketing but also changing the competition schedule to benefit the athletes as well as provide a better fan experience.
"The funny thing about COVID-19 is that we were forced to do things differently and we learnt a few lessons from that. I would speak to the ticketing online. We have kept that because we think it enhances what we do. Similarly, when it comes to the schedule of events," Thompson said.
"We had to spread out the events so people could perform and leave, but we realised that this is something that we could incorporate with the finals spread out over the weeks making it a full experience.
"People buy a season ticket for $23,000 and they want to see the excitement every day not just to wait on Friday and Saturday," he continued.
