Nicholson to continue Faulkland’s survival fight

Second-from-bottom Faulkland had several things to be positive about in their Jamaica Premier League (JPL) game against Cavalier on Monday, with one of their bright sparks, striker Jelani Nicholson, ever threatening throughout.
Nicholson nearly helped Faulkland to pull off the upset of the season, as they led second-place Cavalier 2-1 with just a minute to go in their match.
The big striker had put Faulkland ahead after 15 minutes; however, the relegation strugglers failed to see out the game, conceding an 89th-minute equaliser, denying themselves a second win of the season.
Nicholson's overall contribution enabled him to win the Man of the Match award, which he was elated to receive.
"It was a great performance. My first goal of the season and, actually, my first Premier League goal," he disclosed.
"This (Monday) morning, I told my teammates that I was getting ready for my interview because I was going to be the Man of the Match.
"So it was a great performance, and I am very grateful for everything that happened here tonight. It's unfortunate we could not get the three points, but I am grateful."
The 27-year-old noted that he has been out of competitive football for a few seasons and is working to return to peak condition.
Nevertheless, the goal has lifted his confidence, and he wants to add more to his name.
"I am coming off a long spell of not playing football, so I am just trying to get back some fitness so I can get some more goals.
"I got some chances in games, but I am not as sharp as I used to be; but I am definitely looking to add more to my tally," said the former St James High School striker.
Meanwhile, Faulkland are second from bottom with 10 points from 19 games, six points adrift of safety. Nicholson pointed out that with games running out, they need to start having back-to-back victories to secure their place in the league next season.
"We needed the three points more than Cavalier, but unfortunately, we did not get it because we slacked off in the 89th minute and they got a goal; so we just have to work and come again.
"We have seven games to go, and the team (Vere) in front of us keeps drawing and losing, just the same as us. It is for us to get four straight wins, but unfortunately, tonight we only got a draw," Nicholson said.
