U15s secure opening win in Rising Stars Super 50
Led by a brilliant all-round performance from Demarco Scott, Jamaica opened their Cricket West Indies Rising Stars U15 Super 50 championship with an 18-run win over Barbados in their encounter at the Liberta Cricket Ground in Antigua and Barbuda.
The Jamaicans batting first posted 165 all out in 42.3 overs with the left-handed Scott top-scoring with 49 from 91 balls before he was run out attempting to get to his half-century.
Scott, who hit four boundaries in his knock, shared in a 77-run third-wicket partnership with Savio Jones who made 34 from 50 balls including three fours.
The Jamaicans also got a good start from their openers with Damien Daley and Tyson Gordon Jr adding 47 for the opening wicket.
Daley would be the first to go, bowled by Raphael Lovell while Gordon Jr fell to Akobi Crichlow-Byer for 21.
R'Jai Gittens picked up four wickets, including three in one over to finish with four for 24 while Jakeem Pollard took two wickets for 34 runs.
Scott then returned with the ball to pick up three wickets for 12 runs as Barbados were dismissed for 147 in 39 overs. Adrian Silvera also snared three scalps which went for 22 runs.
Opener Gadson Bowens top-scored for the Barbadians with 67 while Justin Parris made 47.
Manager of the Jamaica team, Denniel Griffith, said the players triumphed in what was a hard-fought tough encounter.
"We have beaten Barbados for the first time in nine years, and the team is elated by this and wishes to use the momentum to push forward," Griffith said.
Meanwhile, Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) easily brushed aside Guyana by seven wickets in their encounter at the Coolidge Cricket Ground.
Guyana were first blown away for just 75 runs in 32.4 overs with Yasir Deen and Darius Batoosingh bagging three wickets each. Christian Lall then hit an unbeaten 32 to steer T&T to 76 for three in 15.2 overs.
At North Sound, the Windward Islands defeated the Leeward Islands by 99 runs. Batting first, the Windwards posted 263 for three in 50 overs with Earsinho Fontaine scoring 130 not out. Jonathan Daniel chipped in with 52. Elran Glasgow and Theo Edward then took three wickets each to restrict the Leewards to 164 all out in 44.1 overs.
Jaheem Clarke top-scored with 40 not out.
