Cavalier hope to show killer instinct in Lynk Cup
With the series delicately poised, Cavalier will look to provide the killer instinct that was missing when they face Mount Pleasant Academy today in the second leg of their Lynk Cup quarterfinal tie at 7 p.m. at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
Both teams played to a 1-1 draw in their first-leg encounter with Ronaldo Webster and Atapharoy Bygrave trading second-half goals leaving the tie firmly in the balance.
Cavalier's technical director Rudolph Speid credited the second half introduction of their starting attack which included Jamaica Premier League (JPL) Golden Boot leader Collin Anderson, Webster and Dwayne Atkinson. While the substitutes combined for the early goal, Speid regretted not being able to further extend their lead when they had the chance.
"We got overconfident because for a while we thought it was easy pickings. But then they made a change and then we just made a mistake in the back," Speid said after the game. "They have scored against us now with a couple of set plays so it is something that we have to work on. I thought we got some better chances that we could have put away a little earlier. But we didn't capitalise."
In league play, Mount Pleasant won their first meeting on December 4 while playing to a 2-2 draw in their return fixture last month.
While mindful of keeping their squad fresh for the JPL playoffs, they are also determined to seize all opportunities for silverware this season and are hoping that they can get their decisive victory this season over Mount Pleasant.
"We have a plan. We understand how they play. We are getting closer. As the old saying goes, the longer you take to win the most likely you are nearer to winning. So I think we are nearer to winning now," Speid said.
Meanwhile, Mount Pleasant head coach Theodore Whitmore was pleased with how his charges responded after going down a goal. Specifically, he hopes that Bygrave will have the attacking support in the second leg to give them the best chance of advancing.
"He needs a lot more support. We didn't get enough numbers going forward (last week) and I think that affected us. (But the draw) was a fair result. We wanted to give players game time and we did that. We were pleased with what we saw," Whitmore said.
Meanwhile, Harbour View and Chapelton Maroons will battle each other in the early game of the double-header at 4 p.m. with the teams tied 1-1 on aggregate.
