Olympian on hand to crown Portmore’s Domino Champion

He is known for blazing the track as part of Jamaica's 4x100 metres gold medal-winning Olympic and World Championship teams which included the likes of Nesta Carter, Asafa Powell and Usain Bolt but Olympian Michael Frater, who is now retired, tried his hand at a different sport as he was part of the hundreds of domino enthusiasts that took part in the Supreme Domino Master Series which made its third stop at Caymanas Park, in Portmore on Sunday.

It was clear that Frater wasn't the best player on the day among the more than 200 participants and David White walked away with bragging rights and $150,000, and automatic qualification for the grand finale after coming out on top in the cut-throat winner take all format.

An overjoyed White expressed that he was very confident coming into the tournament and never lost sight of the prize, even when the matches became incredibly intense.

"I am the best right-handed domino player on this side of the equator. Coming into the tournament, I was extremely confident because I knew that no matter what happened, I was going to be victorious. It feels really good to come out on top, claiming victory over 200 competitors. When I saw my last draw, the table was tied at five wins; it was that moment I was certain that I was going to win, so I said to myself 'This is a draw from God!'" shared White.

Milton Meredith finished in second place and pocketed $100,000, while Romane Savage, and Keron Baxter, won $75,000, and $50,000 each while securing third and fourth places, respectively.

Gary Peart, executive chairman of Supreme Ventures Limited, basked in the success of the Portmore stop of the competition.

"I must extend hearty congratulations to Mr White on claiming victory tonight. It has been a day of fantastic, nail-biting competition, and based on the turnout we've been getting, it is evident that this is something we should've done years ago. Nonetheless, I remain awed by the passion and expertise displayed by the players, and I want to thank each and every participant and spectator who has contributed to our success so far. We are looking forward to even more competitive matches in the next few weeks, as we get closer to the national championship," asserted Peart.

With three community champions already crowned, the tournament will make its next stop in May Pen, on May 7, 2023.
