The lasting image of former Reggae Boy Darren Moore leading Sheffield Wednesday back to the English Championship has turned out to be his final act as manager.

Wednesday announced that Moore left the club by mutual consent yesterday after a two-year stint. The decision comes after Moore engineered Wednesday's return to the Championship, defeating Barnsley weeks ago in the English League One play-off final, to complete a remarkable turnaround after losing the first leg of their play-off semifinal 4-0 to Peterborough United.

Moore took over Wednesday in March 2021, whose relegation from the Championship was confirmed and got them into the play-offs in back-to-back seasons. This year's campaign saw him deal with matters of the field, as he was the subject of online racial abuse after their semifinal first-leg defeat.

Wednesday's chairman Dejphon Chansiri told the club website yesterday that he and Moore determined it was time to conclude their journey but praised Moore for the work put in during his time.

"The journey of Sheffield Wednesday with Darren has been unique, and always, as a team in the football industry, journeys come to an end and now is the time, which we both agree. The mutual respect we have for each other is immense on a personal and professional basis, and I offer my sincere thanks for the dedication and commitment Darrren has given to our club," Chansiri said.

Moore said he leaves with satisfaction that the goal of returning the club to the second tier was achieved and is hopeful that they will be able to return to the Premier League soon.

"Both the chairman and myself have been determined to get this club back into the Championship. I'm delighted this has been achieved, and I hope the football club continues to develop and will soon fulfil the dream of mine, which was to take them back to the Premier League where they belong," Moore said.

"Also, the scenes I witnessed from the technical area at Wembley, especially for the winning goal, will be images I will never forget."

Moore secured 96 points for Wednesday this season, finishing third in the table.
