Jamaica's 2019 World Championship silver medallist Danniel Thomas-Dodd ensured she has momentum going into this week's National Senior and Junior Championships (Trials), with a victory at the Diamond League meet in Stockholm, Sweden, on Sunday, despite less-than-ideal conditions.

Thomas-Dodd won the women's shot put in 19.04 metres in heavy rain at her final meet before she defends her national title this week at the National Stadium in Kingston.

Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands was second in a season's best effort of 19.03 metres, while Fanny Roos of Sweden was third in 18.75.

Thomas-Dodd has put in a strong season so far, highlighted by setting the national record of 19.77 metres two months ago in Los Angeles - a mark that puts her fourth best in the world this year.

For her, being able to thrive even with the difficult circumstances was a positive.

"We did what we could do with these conditions. I am just so proud of these ladies. We knew it was not going to be in our favour with the weather, but I am glad for the ladies to come up and show we can put in good competition.

"I do not think I have ever competed in such rain. For us, rotational throwers, it is a little bit harder - we have to do so many movements, so it was all about ensuring we execute the technique well and not necessarily go too crazy," Thomas-Dodd said.

Thomas-Dodd and the other competitors had to adapt, and she said it was important to maintain good health in the conditions. She is buoyed by the result.

"Most of the time, you need to keep the body dry. It is always harder to be mentally ready until the last throws, especially when you know you are in good shape, to come out when the weather is not in your favour, to be able to put the big pants on and in the last throw, to put one out there and if it is further, it is further. If it is not, it is not.

"At least you walk away from the competition healthy, so that was my main focus but of course, I am glad I am leaving as a winner," Thomas-Dodd said.

Thomas-Dodd has consistently been over in the 19 metres range this season, something she hopes will propel her to secure her ninth national title when her event commences this Saturday.
