Former netball champs Holmwood lead charge into second round

It was smooth sailing for defending senior champions Glenmuir and former champions Denbigh High and Holmwood Technical after dominating their rivals throughout the preliminary round of the ISSA Rural schoolgirl netball competition to book their spots for the second round.

Twelve-time champions Holmwood, who failed to make the final last year, have the best form going into the second round, which begins on Friday.

The Carline Graham Powell-coached Holmwood were ruthless in topping Zone D. In four games, they racked up over 300 goals, including a 99-0 win over Alphansus Davis, a 93-0 victory over Porus High and an 80-0 thrashing of Bellefield High, in a game which was stopped late in the third quarter.

Led by three national under-21 development squad players, in goal defence Shaqwuan Hamilton, goal shooter Jashaun Swaby and centre Jessica Chaplain, they will go up against Zone A second-place Montego Bay High in their first match of Group One in second-round action.

The Rayon Reid-coached Glenmuir, after their first Rural title last year before going on to also win the All-Island crown, dominated Zone F and will go against Zone H winners, Tacky High, in Group Four in their opening match of the second round.

Denbigh, after finishing second to Glenmuir in Zone F, will open up against Dinthill Technical in Group Three. Last year's beaten finalists, Manchester High, second in Zone E behind May Day High, will go up against Cambridge High, who came out on top in Zone B.
