Co-captain Mireya Simpson and Joi-Anne Russell are determined to play their part in helping Immaculate Conception High School once again become the queens of the Corporate Area at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships (Champs).

The Franz Ford-coached Immaculate, a former Corporate area standout, will be hoping to get back on top, but will have to get by Wolmer's Girls' School, who were sixth last year with 111 points, with Immaculate finishing seventh on 94.

Simpson and Russell believe Immaculate can be the best in their region and could finish in the top five. In her final year at Champs, Simpson will compete in the long, high and triple jump, while Russell will carry Immaculate's hopes in the Class Two girls' 100 metres hurdles and the long jump.

"I am not only aiming to be in the final of all three events, but want to medal as this is my final year at Champs.

"My best of the event is the long jump, as I am yet to jump off my full run-up so far this season, and I am satisfied with my results," said Simpson, who recorded 5.22 metres at the recent Youngster Goldsmith Classics.

"We have a great set of coaches who spend time on the technical aspect with us, and I really want to reward them. As one of the team captains, I want to lead from the front as an example for the other members," she added.

SMOOTH PROGRESSION

According to Russell, her season has been going smoothly, as she anticipates excelling at Champs.

"I am proud of my progression so far in both events. I have been competing for my school for the past four years, and I want to do my best by at least being in the final of both events," Russell stated.

Asked which event she preferred, she said: "I really love both events, and I will be doing my best to at least be in the final of both, which can help to give valuable points to the team, as we are very confident that we can come out on top in the Corporate Area.

"We have great coaches, and they spend quality time with us, especially in the technical events, which need a lot of attention," said Russell.
