Terrelonge misses Class Two 100m record after slow start

THERE WERE no fireworks in the 100 metres finals on yesterday's second day of competition of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships.

The fair-size crowd at the National Stadium expected something special from Edwin Allen High's Theianna-Lee Terrelonge in the Class Two 100 metres, after she cruised through her semi-final. However, a sluggish start prevented her from getting close to the 11.16 seconds record set by Kevona Davis, a former Edwin Allen star, in 2018.

Terrelonge had to make up tremendous ground to get to her rivals and only got by leader Sabrina Dockery of Lacovia High close to the finish to win in a personal best 11.22. It was also a personal best for Dockery, who was second in 11.36. St Jago's Brianna Campbell was third in 11.48.

In Class Four, Ferncourt's Rihanna Scott suffered her first defeat of the season as, in an impressive showing, Hydel High's Teixiera Johnson won in a personal best 11.87. Mick-Kayla Gardener of Wolmer's was second in 12.27, with Scott third in 12.31.

Natrece East of Wolmer's won Class Three in a personal best 11.42, ahead of St Jago's Adora Campbell (11.52) with third going to Kerelle Etienne of Edwin Allen in 11.73.

Hydel's Alliah Baker came out on top in Class One, winning in a personal best 11.34. Jounee Armstrong of Edwin Allen was second in 11.52, with Mickayla Gardener of Wolmer's taking third in 11.59.

Mario Ross of Wolmer's Boys ruled supreme in the boys' Class Three 100m, winning in a personal best 10.88, ahead of Calabar's Ched Brown (10.90), with third going to Naethan Bryan of St George's College in 11.02.

Kingston College's (KC) Nyron Wade was victorious in Class Two, winning in a personal best 10.42, ahead of Malike Nugent of Excelsior (10.52) and Tavaine Stewart of Herbert Morrison Technical, 10.55.

Excelsior High's Damor Miller ended the night with a big upset in Class One, winning in a personal best 10.31. Calabar's Khamani Gordon took second in 10.37, with Yourie Lawrence Clarke of KC third in 10.45 .

Kimieka Smith of St Jago produced the first record of the Championships after a personal best of 16 44 metres to win the Class Two girls' shot put. Her mark erased the old record of 15.99m set in 2018 by former Immaculate Conception High thrower Danielle Sloley.

Marlakay Lampart of Clarendon College beat the old record with 16.02m for second.

Earlier in the day, Jamaica College got off to a perfect start wth a one-two finish in the Class Two long jump. Michael Andre Edwards won with a distance of 7.18m, ahead of teammate Jaiver Cato (6.85m), with KC's Amani Phillips taking third with 6.78m.

Edwin Allen are miles ahead of defending champions Hydel High in the girls' points standings and appear to have the title in the bag after just two days. Ahead of today's third day Edwin Allen are on 81 points with Hydel in second on 37. St Jago are third on 36 and they are followed by Wolmer's Girls 29 and Holmwood Technical, 25.

The race for the boys' title is, however, very close with Kingston College (KC) and Jamaica College (JC) tied on 67. Excelsior are third with 29, followed by Calabar High on 24, St Elizabeth Technical on 23 and St Jago, 20.
