St Jago’s record-breaker Smith wants more
St Jago High's Kimeka Smith was the first record breaker at the ongoing ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships at the National Stadium, but the lower-sixth form student still had reservations about her performance.
Smith had a heave of 16.44 metres on the second day on Wednesday, to win the Class Two girls' shot put, breaking the 2018 record of 15.99 metres by former Immaculate Conception High thrower Danielle Slolely.
"I am very happy with my win and the record, although I am a bit disappointed as I knew I could have gone further," said Smith, who stated that she aimed to go at least 17 metres.
A second-year Class 2 athlete, Smith who also won the event last year and was seventh in the discus, will bypass the latter this year, as she looks to provide points for St Jago in the heptathlon.
"I will not be doing the discus this time around as I will be concentrating on the heptathlon. I am looking forward to doing the heptathlon, and I am very confident that I will be among the medals," said Smith, who also wants to do well at this year's Carifta Games in Grenada after winning the under-20 shot put event at the recent Carifta Trials.
"I want to give a big shout-out to my coaches and those who have given me their full support, and I want them to continue believing in me as I will continue to make myself and them very proud," she said.
