Williams: STATHS unfazed by ‘tough’ environment
Phillip Williams, head coach of St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS), explained that he was pleased with the performance of his team as they managed to carve out a 1-0 over Zone D opponents Haile Selassie High in their usually tough environment yesterday.
"The environment coming to Haile Selassie to play, inclusive of the supporters, is usually tough and I think the youngsters did well to stand up to the intimidation and gave a good account of themselves," he stated.
His troops put on a commanding display of attack and defence enroute to their fourth victory in five games. They scored in the sixth minute as Dwayne Atkinson carved out a defence-splitting pass that was capped off by a well-placed shot from Kevin Hall.
As STATHS continued their hunger for more goals, a glorious opportunity would present itself for Taraine Hall in the 25th minute but his left-footed effort only trickled wide of the Haile Selassie goal.
On the cusp of the halftime, the energetic Atkinson was again in the thick of things but failed to convert from close range, as his snapshot whistled over the bar, much to the delight of the Haile Selassie hopefuls.
The second half would conjure up a similar fate for Haile Selassie, as any meaningful attack on the goal was met by resolute defending from the STATHS backline.
As they went in search of a second goal, Hall managed to sneak in between two defenders but couldn't give his team the insurance goal.
With the last kick of the ball, Haile Selassie got a glimpse of goal through Joshua Dewar, who hammered his shot over the bar from just outside the 18-yard box.
Williams was pleased his team managed to keep a clean sheet throughout their five games played.
"I was very pleased as we pride ourselves on our defensive solidity and our defensive unit stood out for us on the day. We aren't scoring many, but we aren't giving up any," he argued.
"It's going to be a tough zone and we know it'll be a dogfight in all the games. We came here with that in mind and the youngsters did well," Williams stated.
