Reggae Boyz through to Nations League final eight
THE Reggae Boyz managed to punch their ticket to the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Nations League following their goalless draw against Honduras last night at the National Stadium. The result meant the Steve McClaren-coached team finished atop League A, Group B on eight points, with their opponents in second on seven.
The game, which started off at a pedestrian pace, failed to generate any meaningful attack from either team for the opening 36 minutes, with the first clear shot on goal coming from Honduran forward Anthony Lozano in the 37th minute. His right-footed shot found its landing in the side netting of the Reggae Boyz goal.
Despite dominating possession, the Reggae Boyz could not manage to register a shot on goal in the first half.
However, in the second half, following the insertion of Renaldo Cephas and Kaheim Dixon, the home team slowly grew into their own as they went in search of goalscoring opportunities. Dixon, in the 68th minute, managed to get by his markers and came closest in getting his team's opener, but saw his shot going wide of the target.
Honduras, whose game weakened as time extended, would spring a chance through Kervin Arriaga, whose powerful shot was comfortably tipped over the bar by Reggae Boyz custodian Andre Blake.
The goalless draw meant that the Reggae Boyz also continued their solid defensive run as they have only conceded a single goal thus far in four games.
Blake, captain of the team, stated that despite the less than impressive display he's pleased with the fact that the team finished atop the group.
"If you're not able to play your best game and still finish top of the group then that's positive. I know we have the players that are capable of doing it, it's still relatively new with the coach so we're going to continue working in training," he stated.
