Historic win for Cavalier
Cavalier Soccer Club won the Concacaf Caribbean Cup for the first time in their history after getting the better of Cibao of the Dominican Republic at the Estadio Cibao in Santiago, the Dominican Republic, last night.
The tie ended 2-2 on aggregate but Cavalier took the title on the away-goal rule. Despite losing the second leg 2-1, the Jamaica club won the first leg 1-0 at home to secure the trophy.
it took Cibao 27 minutes to level the tie when they were awarded a penalty for a hand ball in the box and Juan Diaz slotted home from the spot. A minute later the home team was in front when Ricardo Correa nodded home a cross for the second, to put Cibao up 2-1 on aggregate.
However, Dwayne Atkinson capitalised on Kaile Auvrey's cross in the 54th minute, tapping home from 12 yards to level the score 2-2 on aggregate and ahead on the away goal.
The Jamaican champions also had a number of chances to put the game to bed but they failed to take advantage, with Jalmaro Calvin even hitting the post late in the match.
Despite a late onslaught from the home team, the Rudolph Speid-coached team held out to secure the title.
Player of the tournament Atkinson said despite going two goals down they stayed calm. He noted also that the goal was a big motivation to battle on.
"We kept our composure. They were leading us 2-0 but we knew we needed only one (goal) but we came back and got the job done and we kept a clean sheet in the second half," he said.
"The most difficult moment was when they led us 2-0, our heads were down but we came back second half, regrouped and kept fighting and we give God thanks. The goal gave us the momentum to keep fighting and to go to the end of the game and come out victorious.
"This is one of my biggest achievements in my career. It's a very proud moment for me, my coach and all the fans from Jamaica. So we will give God thanks and celebrate."
Cavalier's Jalmaro Calvin received the Youth Revelation Award, the best goalkeeper award went to Vino Barclett and Shaquille Stein was the Golden Boot winner with eight goals.
