Mount Pleasant increase Vere’s relegation woes
League leaders Mount Pleasant Football Academy ran out the biggest winners in yesterday's Jamaica Premier League football matches, trouncing bottom-of-the-table Vere Phoenix 3-0 at Jamalco Sports Club.
Victory launched the St Ann team to 72 points, six more than second-place Arnett Gardens.
Miguel Joseph opened the scoring for Mount Pleasant at the 25th minute, and Raheem Edwards quickly doubled the score at the 32nd minute. Celestine Franco closed out the scoring at the 87th minute.
Vere Phoenix remain rooted at the foot of the table in the 14-team standings on 23 points and with a six-point deficit to the nearest challengers, they face an uphill battle to save relegation.
Their nearest rival, Molynes United, also took a hit in yesterday's fixture, going down 1-0 to Portmore United at Ferdi Neita Park.
Shacquwell Henry scored the lone goal at the 53rd minute, as Portmore United stayed fourth while moving to 57 points.
Molynes, in the meantime, are tied with 12th-place Humble Lion, who face a tough task in their home match against second-place Arnett Gardens today.
In the day's other game, Harbour View and Racing United battled to a goalless finish at Compound.
Racing, who are fighting for a top-six playoff spot, inched up to seventh on 45 points, the same as Waterhouse, who lie in eighth place.
Form team Tivoli Gardens, with four wins in their last five matches, currently hold the much-sought-after sixth position.
Harbour View are 10th, moving to 32 points after yesterday's stalemate.
The league continues today with four fixtures.
