Married and selling my stuff to put food on the table

June 01, 2020

Dear Pastor

First of all, I want to congratulate you on the wonderful work you are doing. I have children but I don't have much help. I am married and I do day's work. My children's father is not showing much interest in getting jobs. I talk to him every day. He has no ambition at all. He makes me hate him.

Imagine, he told me, when I asked him for money, that I can go and sell. What the fool does not know is that he does not have to tell me that because I have been selling my stuff for a while to put food on the table, and he has been living off my labour. And one of the men I sold my stuff to is his best friend. So his best friend knows about me and laughing at him.

You see, some of these men, Pastor, they cause women to be bad. I never thought that I would come to the place that I would be so desperate for money that I would have to sell myself. I am just waiting for my children to past the worst and I am going to leave this man. The things he told me, if he should know the truth about me I would have to run.

I have a friend who lives in England. We were friends from schooldays, and we still like each other. And whenever he is in Jamaica I don't have to fret. They are so many things I have on my mind that I can't write to you about. Everybody has gone to bed so I am taking the time to write this letter. My friend in England has promised to give me the money to divorce this man. I can't stand to look at my husband.

C.P.

Dear C.P.,

Why would your husband suggest to you that you should sell yourself? Do you believe that he has suspected that you are doing so? Or was he trying to be nasty? It is not unusual for men who do not have any money to suggest to their women that they should sell themselves. And some men act like pimps and put their women on the road to sell themselves and to bring part of what they have earned to them. Such men are just terrible and they live off their women.

Your husband does not believe in working hard. One may say that you were driven to prostitution by your husband, and that is mighty sad. On the other hand, if he did not have a part in what you are doing to survive he may threaten your life.

I am sorry to hear that you are prostituting yourself, and I hope that you would end this type of lifestyle. You say you do day's work. Perhaps what you are earning is not enough to take care of your children and to feed your good-for-nothing husband. But you are living dangerously by selling yourself so you will have to learn to live on the little you are earning.

You are probably being very discreet in what you are doing, but even your husband's friend is buying sex from you. And I am afraid if you continue to share your body with other men it won't be long before your husband finds out. It might be better for you to divorce your husband and live alone with your children. It is very unwise to have other men in your life while you are sharing your house with your husband.
