Jamaican musician jailed for swallowing 102 packages of ganja

A Jamaican musician was sentenced to 18 months in jail in Barbados for attempting to smuggle marijuana into the country on August 9, STAR ONLINE understands.

According to www.barbadostoday.bb, Dervent Anthony Bartlett, 38, pleaded guilty to charges of possession, trafficking, intent to supply and importation when he appeared before Magistrate Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell yesterday.

It is understood that Bartlett was attempting to smuggle 1.5 kilogrammes of cannabis into Barbados.

Reports are that when he came through the Grantley Adams International Airport last Tuesday, his luggage was searched by Customs officials, but they found no drugs during that search.

However, Bartlett was handed over to police who interviewed him before taking him to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where an x-ray was conducted.

It was revealed that he had 102 packages in his intestines.

Bartlett was sentenced to 18 months in jail on the count of trafficking, and was convicted, reprimanded and discharged on the counts of possession, intent to supply and importation.
