Zum in serious, stable condition

Police are yet to determine the motive for the shooting of Montego Bay-based music producer in Trelawny, Evan Powell, popularly known as Zum, operator of Good Good Productions, who was injured in a gun attack along the Salt Marsh main road last Thursday.

It was reported that shortly after 7 p.m., Powell was driving, when men in another vehicle opened fire on him. A licensed firearm holder who was a passenger in Powell's vehicle returned fire and the gunmen sped off. Reports are that Powell was shot four times in his legs, and rushed to the Trelawny hospital. He was later taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital for emergency surgery. According to the head of the Trelawny police, Superintendent Clive Blair, Powell is in serious but stable condition.

"We are all devastated but thankful he is alive," said Kevin Powell, the producer's brother.

Good Good Productions is known for the production of a number of popular dancehall rhythms, including Freezing Point, Triple X, Brit Jam, Cool Out, Happy Tyme, Liquor and the most recently released Cure Pain Riddim.

Steady contribution

Powell famously reassembled Vybz Kartel's defunct 'Gaza' camp for his new compilation titled Vybz School rhythm. The rhythm features several recording artistes who were signed to Vybz Kartel's Portmore Empire label.

Along with steady contribution to the dancehall sound, Powell is also the organiser of Montego Bay's Brit Jam Spring Break Festival.

Last January, Alonzo Clarke, who was also part of the Brit Jam promotional team, was shot and killed metres from the Barnett Street Police Station in St James. According to reports, Clarke, a carpenter by profession, was chased by his attackers and shot multiple times in the heart of the city, with no established motive.
