Chozenn under fire ... Gospel artiste remakes raunchy song
Gospel artiste Chozenn has come under heavy fire from critics for his latest single, Jesus Name Mi Bawl Out.
The song is a remix of the popular secular hit, Bawl Out by dancehall artiste, Dovey Magnum.
Although the lyrics of the song are sending a Christian message, the song has been dubbed a miss by many who believe the context of the secular track is way too raunchy for it to ever be ‘cleaned up’ and remixed as a gospel track.
Chozenn, who has done a music video for his version of ‘Bawl Out’, posted a snippet of the video to his official Instagram page earlier this week to promote the song and has been receiving heavy backlash from social media users.
“Playing this at church and the church sisters singing @doveymagnum raw version. This is wrong on so many levels,” one user wrote.
“Listen, I’m running out of church if this plays in my church, I’m sorry,” another commented.
Users have gone as far as to say that for Chozenn to have rewritten the entire song, he must have at some point, listened the secular version in its entirety.
Contacted yesterday, Chozenn said he was in Barbados said he could not entertain an interview at the time. However, he directed THE STAR to a description of the YouTube video for the much-talked about song.
“Naturally this song will provoke emotions but this move of God shows anything bad can become good…music is powerful, the core of agenda is to target our youth and provide an option to what they’re hearing in our taxis, buses, supermarkets, communities and surprisingly our homes,” a part of the description reads.
“As a minister of the gospel in these last days, we have to use wisdom and tap into our culture and invade it positively,” he said.
Following the release of the statement, the entertainer received support from some fans who argue that unconventional methods may be employed in order to minister to persons.
“The Bible states that as his follower, you have to go out and reach the people no matter where they at. God using you for greatness, some people can't go manage it,” one user commented.
Another user said: “I’m a Christian and I love it. Sometimes these original songs that the youth are so focused on can be used in our own versions to spread the word and to bring some closer to God. You have to use what they like and turn it to something that they will still listen to and understand what God is doing.”
Dovey Magnum's management team declined to comment on the matter yesterday.
