Twin Cupid makes music debut

June 14, 2019

Identical twin singjays Karif and Kadif Bailey have made their music debut with ' Di Buff'.

Going by the moniker Twin Cupid, the duo is based in Maryland, US, and say the response to the track has been overwhelming.

"Me never expect that within a week the song would be blowing up. We hear people playing it over here in Maryland too, and it has really given us the push we were looking for and shows that people are accepting us; it's a warm welcome," Kadif, told THE WEEKEND STAR.

Produced by K-Complexxx, the song's raunchy nature was deliberate.

"Trying conscious music would be more difficult to grab people's attention, so it's all about grabbing the attention first, marketing the product, and then we can go in-depth with the message," Kadif said. "We do mostly dancehall, we don't want to stick to just the party type of music or be limited. At the end of the day, we want to use our music to open the eyes of our generation to let them know there is life out there to live, and to stop killing each other."

Describing himself as a goal-oriented motivator, Kadif holds a bachelor's degree in sports management from the University of Technology (UTech). Karif sees himself as a humble go-getter, and earned a dental hygiene bachelor's degree from the same institution before the two migrated to the US four years ago.

Though they hold day jobs, music has always been on the agenda. After seeing QQ emerge with the 2005 track Better Must Come, they decided to pursue music, but were given one condition.

"We grew up in an extended family with our single mother in Wood Hall, Clarendon, and she wanted us to finish our education first and wait till we were in a position where we could manage on our own to do what we want," said Kadif.

Karif revealed that while at Central High School, they used to go to studios with Silver Cat and even came close to working with Merciless.

"But it never worked out 'cause of the financial side," said Karif. "We waited till we completed school and were in a better position to not depend on anyone to do music, so we're taking it on now."

They believe the 'twin factor' boosts interest in their music, and cite Twin of Twins as inspiration.

"I actually look up to them, we met them while we were at UTech," said Karif. "They've been holding it down for quite some time with their dub-dancehall style. We do hardcore dancehall, deejay-singjay type of music, so we have some differences and similarities between us."
