Organisers of the FemFest Jamaica are ready to celebrate excellence and empowerment. In its second year, the awards show and one-day festival has doubled on its commitment to highlight women in the music industry as well as entrepreneurship under the theme 'Boss Babes'.

Recording artiste Macka Diamond and TVJ producer Sharon Schroeter are of the persons who will be receiving awards at the ceremony, which will be held at the Kingston 10 Sports Bar and Grill this Friday, almost on the eve of International Women's Day.

The awardees are selected by a small panel comprising the likes of Dr Garth McDonald, the medical doctor who is known in entertainment circles as Shaka Pow, and FemFest Jamaica founder Alicia-Ann Carpio.

Schroeter, who is the producer of Jamaican television's Intense and the station's long-running talent show, Digicel Rising Star, will be receiving the Femfest honouree Award for Top Female Producer.

Macka Diamond is the FemFest Lifetime Achievement in Music Awardee - her second time being selected for the category but she will receive it this time around.

Roxborough, best known as Sassydivva, said that female-only awards are not common in the space locally.

"Having been in the industry for approximately 15 years, I realised there are a lot of women working really hard and it goes unnoticed. It was only right to create an official space to honour those who work 10 times as hard and give them a chance to show up and speak up," Sassydivva told THE STAR.

She added: "Think of the platform as less of feminist, but more edutainment-focused to compliment Jamaica's fast-rising and consistent female contributors.

OTHER AWARDEES

Also set to receive awards are Pamputtae, she will receive The Women's Empowerment Award for the Single Mother Foundation, and D'Angel, who was selected the Fashionista of the Year.

A former St Catherine Festival Queen, the event organiser said she wants to change the game and the attitude of her peers.

"There is too much of a crab-inna-barrel mentality in our nation, significantly among women, and the vision for 2020 is to find more ways to see how we can encourage each other ... to build up one another," she said.

The ceremony will feature special performances by a few of the awardees as well as Raine Seville and her daughter, Double K, and Kerry Star.
