Stylist named Neko finds humour in popular song
The refrain, " Neko, yuh mash up mi life!" from the popular song by A'mari has taken on a life of its own, incessantly sliding off the lips of too many women and even children.
For fashionista Bootleg Rocstar, whose given name is Neko Kelly, it had the potential to be a nightmare, but he is trying his best to see the light side of the situation.
"Never in my life did I ever expect to be haunted by my own name," he told THE WEEKEND STAR. "I heard the song while I was scrolling on my IG (Instagram) and someone tagged me under her post of the video/song, and I instantly screamed out in laughter. For the first two days, it was extremely hilarious. I even shared the video on my Instagram, but then it started to become a little bit annoying because my DMs are full with mentions and messages about the song. At this point, I will have to change my name to George or something."
Nonetheless, the creative director and stylist wouldn't mind a one-on-one with A'mari. "I need her to hit me up to style her, 'cause no way she can be singing a song with my name in it and not have me let her look fabulous while bawling that Neko mash up her life," said Kelly, who used to style dancehall artiste Ishawna.
HUMOROUS AND CREATIVE
Kelly, however, said he admired A'mari's creativity and urged her to "keep entertaining and keep being a source of laughter for people in such a weird and scary COVID-19 time".
But he confessed that the song was now stuck in his head. "So right now, I'm more focused on getting it out my head. But I'd love for everyone to keep streaming and buying it in support of A'mari's career," he said. Kelly believes 'Neko' has become a household name partly because the name is not a popular one. "And to have it in a song is interesting and feels very personal. Also, I feel like A'mari's delivery of it was just flat-out hilarious, and then the video added to the mix was the icing on the cake," he said.
