Like most aspiring artistes, Lexichromazz got her musical start in church. It is therefore no wonder gospel singers like Jabez and Judith Gayle are listed among her biggest inspirations.

But, if one thought the 28-year-old would jump-start her professional career singing sweet songs in the House of God, one would be mistaken. Instead, the St Ann native is looking to make headway in the highly competitive dancehall arena.

"I have been doing music since I was 11 years old. I used to be on the choir at church and the first song I wrote was a gospel song. I went on a lot of church trips, performed at different churches and events. I love gospel music but I also love dancehall," Lexichromazz told STAR On The Rise. "Dancehall music (not all songs) let me medz differently and pree life on a different perspective. Dancehall music gives me a vibes like no other and so I want to start there."

Lexichromazz said she is planning on doing gospel "on the side" because of its big impact on her life.

"(Gospel music) encouraged me in so many ways, put me in a different mindset to associate with God, gives me courage when I'm feeling down. Because of that, even though I will be doing dancehall, it will be message music. It will be for people to have fun and vibe to but it will be wholesome," she said.

As she sets her sights on a career in dancehall music, the entertainer has Shenseea, Spice, Jada Kingdom and Dexta Daps on her list of artistes to work with. Well aware that with her church background, her choice of the dancehall space will be frowned upon by some, the up-and-coming artiste says she knows that she cannot be thin-skinned.

"Working in any creative or artistic field requires you to be tough, thick-skinned, and the music industry is no exception. Artistes, musicians, managers, agents and promoters - they all experience criticism at some point in their careers," she said. "The trick is learning how to deal with that criticism and using the negatives and the disappointments to your advantage. Then, you continue moving towards your goals without getting sidetracked."

Lexichromazz said that the entertainment industry has always been her calling, and states that once she gets to fulfil her dreams of becoming a leading female artiste, she would have accomplished a great deal.

"Music is everything to me. I use it to express my feelings at times, it uplifts me, and I hope to use it to inspire people. Once I get to do that, I would be forever grateful because I have wanted nothing else since I was 11 years old," she said.
