El Benzo remakes Gregory Isaacs’s Night Nurse

US-based dancehall artiste El Benzo is a huge Gregory Isaacs fan. That is why he decided to pay tribute to the reggae great by fusing the contemporary dancehall sound with the masterful themes of Isaacs' timeless masterpieces, Night Nurse and Rumours.

"I wanted to create a grounding intersection in which past, present and future collide, using the spirit of Gregory's songs. I grew up listening to his songs. I wasn't sure I could gain permission to sample his tracks so instead of sampling his songs, mi just give dem an update," El Benzo explained.

"I used the spirit and themes of his songs such as Rumours, how it affects someone's life in a 21st century context, with social media, and again, I examined similar updated ideas on Night Nurse. What is the modern day equivalent of a Night Nurse? Is it drugs or sex or affection? The song is about feelings, depression, late night doubts, addictions and coping with life," El Benzo added.

Born in the US, he grew up in New Jersey where he attended Bloomfield Tech. He visited Jamaica during summer holidays and fell in love with the island's vibrant music and culture.
