Christmas events bring traffic changes to Morant Bay
Motorists are being advised of temporary traffic changes for Morant Bay on Sunday as the St Thomas Municipal Corporation hosts its annual kids' treat, Christmas tree lighting ceremony and fireworks display.
Speaking during the corporation's monthly meeting on Thursday, Mayor of Morant Bay, Councillor Hubert Williams, said the arrangements are in anticipation of the significant turnout of persons expected for the exciting activities.
"We are expecting a very large crowd. Because of that, we have made some traffic arrangements for the day. So, Queen Street will facilitate traffic going from west to east, one way. We are going use a one-way traffic on Harbour Street in the earlier part of the day until approximately 2 p.m. when the churches will be out. After 2, then South Street will be one way leading from east to west," the mayor outlined.
The kids' treat will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the tree lighting ceremony is slated to begin at 6 p.m. The exciting fireworks display begins at 9:30 p.m. All activities will take place at the Rudolph Elder Park in Morant Bay.
"I am hoping to see everyone. Come out and let's enjoy the Christmas season," Williams urged.
As shoppers prepare for the usual active festive season in the eastern parish, the mayor has advised that following discussions with vendors, an understanding was reached regarding arrangements for them to ply their wares.
"We're going to close the town off on Thursday evening, and Monday you will see them out on the street. We have somewhat relaxed some of the anti-vending measures for the festive season, as per usual," Williams said.
