As someone who came of age in the 1980s, Vassell Meka has a preference for lovers' rock reggae.

He revisits that classic sound for Wrapped Up, a song he produced and co-wrote with his wife Desiree. The Connecticut-based artiste also played drums, bass guitar and keyboards on the song which was released late last year. To win over younger fans, Vassell Meka added a contemporary flavour.

"The sound I prefer is a modern reggae sound blended with foundation sounds, but with a brighter texture," he said.

Wrapped Up is his fifth song. Done for his Legacy Mekas Music label, it is earmarked for his first album, which is scheduled for release this year.

While he learned the rudiments of music during a one-year stint at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston, Vassell Meka is largely a self-taught musician. He maintained his ties to music after migrating to the United States, and kept busy on the Connecticut reggae scene.

Since launching his production company in 2018, he has worked with several acts such as Chiliguys, New Awtical Band, Minori and Caleb Hart. He has also released self-produced songs such as Good Vibes, Troddin, Amendment Op and Flowers in My Garden.
